All about Ashley...

Ashley Lynn Hengst is passionate about helping Christians develop a healthy life-giving theology through teaching, writing and preaching womanist theology. Ashley is a Cuban American from Miami and the host of "The Unlearning Podcast." She is a proud Eagle, having earned her undergraduate degree in English at North Carolina Central University. For grad school, she pursued her passion for film and theology earning a Master of Fine Arts in Motion Pictures and Television at the Academy of Art University and a Master of Divinity at Claremont School of Theology.

 For the first 10 years of her career, Ashley worked for three  different branches of the YMCA doing everything from teaching PE, leading a summer camp and coaching staff.  After her career at the Y, Ashley transitioned to working with cancer families at the St. Baldrick's Foundation, helping families share their experience to raise funds for childhood cancer grants.

Ashley's biggest passion is for the Christian Church. As a lesbian Christian rooted liberation theology, Ashley longs to help set others free from toxic theology.  The Unlearning Podcast is all about her unlearning journey in hopes of guiding people towards a healthy Christian spirituality. When she is not working, Ashley enjoys boxing, photography, cooking, gardening and spending time with her wife and daughter.
